History
- SLWJA was first established as an organisation of the journalists employed at state print media institutions.
- With the expansion of the electronic media institutions in the 80s, the organisation's membership was open to the television and radio journalists.
- As a result of the endeavors of the then leaders, the organization was converted into an established organization by a parliament act in 1987.
- In the latter part of the 80s the suggestion for establishing a pension and social security scheme for the journalists was put forward by the organization. Since then the organization have been struggling to bring this suggestion into practice.
- The organization has been committed to for the welfare of the journalists and enhancement of the quality of the profession of journalism.
- A new constitution for the organisation was ratified by a special general meeting called for amending the constitution in 2000.
- In 2002 the organisation was offered the Associate Membership of the IFJ.
- Putting an end to a period of inactiveness which lasted for couple of years, in 2005, an election was held to elect the new office bearers for the organisation. A new executive board which has a majority youth representation was elected by the secret vote of the members. This marked a turning point of the organisation.
